‘Mr. Robot’ season 2 spoilers: Rami Malek on complicated filming, Elliot’s future
While it was somewhat of a surprise to see “Mr. Robot” walk away from the 2016 SAG Awards without Rami Malek winning the Drama Actor prize, we are at least grateful to have some further information on what should be a really epic second season.
We know that Malek has taken a lot of time to prepare for what is coming up next for his character of Elliot, and he told Entertainment Weekly at the awards that the show is also taking a very different approach to the way in which it is being filmed:
“We’re going to shoot everything as if we’re shooting a movie, so just jumping around from episode to episode, which seems very daunting but we have one director for the entire season, Sam Esmail, our creator.”
It is not necessarily unheard of to have the same person direct a full season of a show, given that Cary Fukunaga did that for the entirety of the first season of “True Detective” and it happens often in the UK. However, it is particularly notable that this same director is also the showrunner who also writes many episodes. (Esmail is credit for writing five of the season 1 episodes, including the premiere and the finale.)
Malek also teased that the writers “delve much more into the psychosis and his mental illness this year,” which should give him even more great material to play (and could also improve his odds of being honored at some other awards show moving forward, though it’s really not about that so much as the quality of the art).
