‘Legends of Tomorrow’ episode 2 review: Has Vandal Savage taken his first life?

Vandal -

If nothing else, we can now say with certainty that “Legends of Tomorrow” is a show with serious guts. They made a rather huge move during the second episode of the show, and you do have to wonder what the ramifications of this said move will be.

In the end, you don’t mess with Vandal Savage. He got an opportunity to take a life in this episode, and used it in order to kill Carter Hall. He was about to kill Kendra Saunders once more, but failed in doing so as the rest of the team stopped him. As for what this means in the long-term, this remains to be seen. Will Hawkman be reincarnated back in the 1970s, or in the present? Either way, we do at least know he’ll be back eventually. It is mostly a question of when. Update: Our answer seems to be based on refreshing ourselves that Carter will be reincarnated after Kendra dies, and they will be born again together. That still doesn’t make matters that much clearer…

In the end, “Legends of Tomorrow” is a show that is clearly interested in doing some surprising things to get your attention, only to them come up with unique ways to explain them later. For example, Rip Hunter risked the timeline in order to ensure that Martin Stein in the 1970’s still met his future wife, just as we also saw Jax run the risk of blowing up almost everyone with how he contained a nuclear warhead.

The show is a thrill to watch! It’s fast-paced, surprising, but still not perfect. There are some issues that need to be worked out, with one of the biggest ones being that we’re not really getting enough time in any one person’s head. Our solution to this is mostly that you tell episodes from the perspective of a character or two, and then you can expand a little outward from there. Right now, it’s very lofty to try to keep track of everyone. Episode Grade: B+.
