‘Chicago Med’ episode 8 preview: Dr. Manning’s return is hardly a quiet one

When “Chicago Med” returns to NBC with a new episode in one week’s time, it will be one that proves to probably be more complicated than Dr. Manning would have wanted it to be. When you are returning from maternity leave, we feel like going to zero to sixty has to be an especially difficult thing to do … especially when you have a case of a father who may be over-medicating his own daughter to death. How do you exercise control in this world? That’s something she and the other doctors will have to figure out, and one of the fascinating things about this is that it will continue along the recent “Chicago Med” theme of telling morally complex stories that place its characters in situations where not everything is black and white.

“Dr. Manning (Torrey DeVitto) returns from maternity leave and helps treat a teen with a long history of medical issues. Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) attends to a former Navy shipmate with a potentially life-threatening ailment and goes above and beyond the scope of his duties to ensure he gets the proper treatment. Saudi Prince Faisal (guest star Lymen Chehade) arrives at the hospital for a planned surgical procedure, but only from Dr. David Downey (guest star Gregg Henry), the hot-shot surgeon who takes a shine to the work of Dr. Rhodes (Colin Donnell). Meanwhile, a budding romance between Sarah (Rachel DiPillo) and hospital lab tech Joey (guest star Peter Mark Kendall) looks hopeful, but April (Yaya DaCosta) might think otherwise.”

Hopefully before we get to the end of this episode we will figure out one way or another if Manning can save this girl, but this is far from the only priority the show has moving forward. This synopsis makes that clear and then some.
