Ratings: ‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 6, ‘Shadowhunters’ off to solid start; ‘Teen Wolf’ falls

How did the first night of Freeform fare in the primetime ratings? For the most part, we feel like the network has to be pretty thrilled that the change of name from ABC Family did not lead to that big of a dent.

Overall, the winter premiere of “Pretty Little Liars” drew a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is enough for it to be #1 on cable for the night. Not only that, but scored its second-best rating since the season premiere. The only episode to fare better was the summer finale, which drew unusually high numbers (think along the lines of a 1.4) because of the big reveal of Charlotte DiLaurentis as “A.” This is probably not something that would have happened otherwise.

Meanwhile, the much-awaited premiere of “Shadowhunters” drew ratings that we feel like the network should be satisfied with in a 0.8. This was double the ratings of both “Teen Wolf” and “The Shannara Chronicles” on MTV, which were both down slightly from their first episode back. “Shadowhunters” is being thought of in some ways already as the new Freeform flagship show, but we admit that we thought that it would probably launch to a 1.0 given the source material. Still, if it keeps its numbers anywhere close to that rating you have to assume that it is going to be brought back for another season. There’s no reason not to.

Were any of these shows hurt by the presence of the State of the Union Address across many networks? We imagine that it is possible, but we don’t want to put a whole lot of stock in that for now.
