‘The Gilded Age’ series from ‘Downton Abbey’ creators is still in development

Remember “The Gilded Age“? This was a series first announced several years ago as the follow-up to “Downton Abbey” for executive producers Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame. The show was planned for NBC, but it became clear that there was not much of a hurry to make it happen. “Downton” ended up going for many more years on ITV, and it is only now that this show is over that there is some talk concerning it happening once more.

Specifically, Neame told Broadcasting & Cable in a new interview that there are some plans to at least begin work on “The Gilded Age” soon, though it does still feel like this is a show that will not happen until far in the future:

“There have been conversations about a Downton Abbey movie, which is a possibility, but there are no firm plans at the moment. We are going to embark on a show for NBC called The Gilded Age, which is a bit similar in tone and subject matter. It’s set in the 19th century in New York and New England.”

Our feeling at the moment is that “The Gilded Age” is still well more than a year away, provided that NBC gets to the point where it wants to schedule the show. It has to be written, and then cast and prepared in some manner. Following all that, there are of course questions about if a period drama can really draw huge ratings in the way that “Downton” did. We think it is possible, but it will need a very smart campaign behind it in order for it to happen.
