‘Downton Abbey’ season 6: Exec made cameo in series finale

For those of you who wonder if there are any particular Easter eggs in the “Downton Abbey” series finale that aired this past Christmas on ITV, we now come to you with an answer: There’s at least one little one that is present, but you may not be able to actually spot it. Instead, it was more of a measure for executive producer Gareth Neame to keep from falling asleep during the last scene of production at the Ritz Hotel in London.

Speaking to the New York Post in one of many interviews setting up the final-season premiere on January 3, Neame had the following to say:

“We had to shoot between 1 and 5 in the morning. I thought, ‘How am I going to stay awake?’ … I was a maître d in the last scene. It was a clever way of keeping myself awake.”

These cameos are the ones that we do always love to hear about, if for no other reason than that it adds another layer of fun to even a serious show. Plus, we think that Neame earned himself a chance to be a part of the scenery at least for the last episode of the show. After all, it’s a great opportunity to go down in history in a way that is a little more visual to him. Plus, it’s a nice memory.

We’ve already seen the British airings of “Downton Abbey,” but what we are going to do to keep our reviews fresh for the American airings is put them together in a way that focuses on a single item or topic. It’s something that we have done with many other seasons of the show, and it allows us a chance to revisit the series and see things from a different perspective than we would have otherwise.
