‘Black Sails’ season 3: New promo teases action, Blackbeard, and much more

The third season of “Black Sails” is coming on Starz January 23, and in preparation of that, the network is starting to really ramp up their promotional efforts. How else do you explain the new promo HERE?

What we find most interesting about this promo is that we don’t really see it as a sign that the network is playing to the hardcore fans in the slightest; instead, it seems more geared to encapsulate what the series is, or at least the parts of it that are more PG-rated, for casual viewers in hopes that they can be convinced to watch for the first time. You’ve got pirates (of course), swashbuckling, violence, and a little bit of drama thrown in there. This season also does have Blackbeard, played by “Rome” and “Dexter” actor Ray Stevenson.

We do see the potential being higher for this series than really ever before, largely because Starz has also expanded its reach. In between “Outlander” and also “Power,” the network now has three very stable hits in the drama category, and we know that they are working to find more. While there may not superficially be too much that the three have in common, often good dramas are good dramas, and it doesn’t really matter if they are similar. Viewers will check them out if they are of the highest quality.

Sure, “Black Sails” benefits in that it’s really one of the only pirate stories being told on TV right now … but it also happens to be a very good one.
