Is the future of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ in limbo?
Is it time for “So You Think You Can Dance” to finally dance off the stage? We hope not, but the pressure is really on Fox now to make a decision on their long-running competition.
According to Deadline, the network is still mulling whether or not to bring the show back for a 13th season this summer, and the decision may need to come before January considering that this is when the show could be holding open auditions as they have done so many times in the past. We know that the relationship between Fox and Nigel Lythgoe is still there, especially given the recent reports that he will be returning to “American Idol” in order to help produce the grand finale later in the spring.
While “So You Think You Can Dance” is highly regarded as one of the finest shows on the air, it does have a significant problem in the ratings. For one reason or another, it’s just not generating the numbers from mainstream viewers. Is there a way to fix that? It’s hard after so many years on the air, but what we would hope that Fox would do is, like “American Idol,” give the show a final season where it can tribute itself and go with almost a back-to-basics approach. We’d love to see Nigel and Mary Murphy back together, and also so away with the while Stage vs. Street theme. We’d keep the All-Stars, mostly because that is a great way still to celebrate the show’s run.
Past contestants from this show have gone on to do great things. Many of them are now top choreographers, they have toured with the biggest artists in show business, and they’ve even gotten prestigious gigs over on “Dancing with the Stars.”
