‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5, episode 10 review: The Dark One’s endgame and the underworld

Dark Emma -Tonight’s “Once Upon a Time” episode was all about darkness and redemption, happiness and sadness. Also, it was about characters doing the right thing once and for all after being so naive for so long.

We want to start here with Belle’s decision to leave Rumpelstiltskin for the time being, saying that they have spent too much time trying to make this relationship work, and while Rumple may finally be good and pure, who knows if that will last? We’re bummed out as a Rumbelle ‘shipper, but she was not going to look so great if she continued time and time again to forgive him for what happened.

Now, let’s move forward to the other relationship of the hour: Hook and Emma! He had descended into darkness after learning he was the Dark One, and this story finally connected from the days of Camelot to where we arrived in Storybrooke during the premiere. She took everyone’s memory away to ensure that he forgot, but this only worked for a time before it all came back, and he was violent and ruthless once more. He couldn’t kill Rumple, but as it turned out, he really didn’t want to in the first place. He wanted to summon all of the other villains from the Underworld to destroy goodness once and for all.

Basically, we’ve got an army of evil Dark Ones, and a town that has very little way to stop them. We were starting to get a little bit ho-hum on this story without a consistent villain, and while we think that the road here was somewhat confusing and the time-jumping unnecessary, we do like where we are going entering the fall finale. Grade: B.
