‘Grey’s Anatomy’ winter finale reaction: Martin Henderson on Owen’s sibling twist
Who knew that Owen on “Grey’s Anatomy” had a sister? It is probably unfair in some ways to call this a massive twist or change to the game, if for no other reason than that in order to be a twist, it would have had to be something that was the complete opposite of what we knew. We never really knew anything. It was not so much a secret as it was something that goes unsaid.
Now, the question is just what happened to her. Maybe she’s alive, maybe she’s dead, and ultimately, what seems to matter here is that this is most likely the circumstance that caused the downfall in the relationship between Owen and newcomer Dr. Riggs. This is something that Martin Henderson, who plays the character, elaborated on to TVLine:
“There’s something in his history that involves Owen’s sister, who is not around from the sounds of it. But what that means and the circumstances surrounding it I don’t know an awful lot about. As you probably know, things are mysteriously dribbled out to the audience [for the show]. And even I don’t know the exact circumstances of it yet.”
In regards to the events at the end of the episode with Amelia, Henderson adds that since Riggs and Owen are not spending time together, he may not know about her relationship with Kevin McKidd’s character; meanwhile, he also probably does not know that she is an alcoholic. Nothing he does in this scene with Meredith’s sister would be wrong if it was someone different in a different circumstance.
