‘True Detective’ creator inks new deal with HBO; season 3 fate still uncertain

While we cannot say with confidence as of this writing that there will be more of “True Detective” on HBO, we can now at least confirm that the show’s creator is staying put for the time being.

Nic Pizzolatto has inked a new deal that will keep him working HBO through at least 2018, and there are a variety of different projects he can develop; while a third season of the show (which was beloved for season 1 and largely reviled for the second) is a possibility, it is not confirmed. Here is what network head Michael Lombardo had to say:

“I am thrilled to continue our relationship with Nic, as he is one of the most exceptionally talented writers and producers working today … I look forward to seeing where his unique creative vision will take us next.”

We do think that Pizzolatto is a brilliant talent, but what he probably needs at this point is a project that allows him to actually establish a little bit of distance from the show. This means an opportunity to move to potentially a new setting and work with a wide new array of characters and actors. The show felt weighted during its second season, almost like he had pressure to somehow make season 2 rise to the top when it comes to pointed, thought-provoking drama. It was devoid of humor, and at times to pretentious for its own good.

Given the reviews that season 2 received, you have to suspect that the media-shy Pizzolatto is going to be very invested in trying to deliver something truly great on whatever he does next.
