‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5, episodes 8 and 9 preview: Merida meets Mulan!

There are two episodes of “Once Upon a Time” airing on ABC Sunday night, but for those curious, we have a feeling that the sneak peek below is from the second. This is going to be where we see the return of Jamie Chung as Mulan for the first time in well over a year.

This video makes it clear that Merida’s father has hired her some help in training for battle, and at first, she scoffs at the idea by saying that she doesn’t need help from a man to learn what to do. Not long after that, though, Mulan completely destroys her before revealing who she really is underneath her helmet.

Do we imagine that this will make for a fun story? Probably so, given that we haven’t seen Mulan in such a long time and we know that eventually, this story will lead directly into her getting a chance to spend time with Red in addition to Merida. These three are going to embark on a mission, which should be fun for longtime fans of the show. It also gives the other cast members a little bit of a breather work-wise, which is nice since they all have some meaty material coming both the rest of this season and also in the second half, which seems to be revolving around the characters visiting what could be the Underworld.

For those wondering right now whether this scene is the beginning of a possible Merida / Mulan romance, Amy Manson has already nixed the idea.
