‘Game of Thrones’ season 6: George R.R. Martin never expected show to catch up books

As any fan of “Game of Thrones” at the moment knows, the show is starting to get extremely close to surpassing the George R.R. Martin book series A Song on Ice and Fire on which it is based. As a matter of fact, it may do so if season 6 premieres before The Winds of Winter does. There have been rumors regarding a possible delay in season 6’s premiere date for the book to come out, but that has not been confirmed in the slightest. As a matter of fact, Martin has been intentionally coy on announcing that date so that he can focus on finishing.

The reality here is that, as you would expect, the show catching up to Martin is something that he has been anticipated for many years. However, many years ago he never imagined he’d be in this situation. Speaking at his recent chat at Northwestern (per Vulture), the writer said the following:

“I’ve been hearing them come up behind me for years, and the question is,How can I make myself write faster? I think, by now, the answer is, I can’t. I write at the pace I write, and what the show is doing is not going to change what the books are,” he said, noting that the only way the TV series influences his writing is in the sense that it ratchets up his stress. “I started writing about these characters and this world in 1991, and we didn’t have the first meetings to create the show until 2008, so I got like a 17-year head start!”

Here’s one other thing that is a reality: Even if season 6 comes out after the latest book in the series is released, season 7 will be there before the next and potentially final chapter of the series. That is something that all book fans better be prepared for now.
