‘Gotham’ season 2, episode 6 review: Edward Nygma’s killer move; Bridgit Pike’s story burns bright

Nygma -The moment that we saw Bridgit Pike first done her Firefly costume on “Gotham,” one thing was fairly clear: This was not going to end well. Like another villain that came before her in Jerome, she burned far too fast, and flew way too close to the sun. The only difference is that she did so with literal fire … and she actually is still alive, as revealed to the end of the episode.

While Jim Gordon told Selina that he would do what he could to save her (hey, look at Selina getting material this season finally), Bridgit had already made the decision to go out in what she thought was some sort of a blaze of glory. It’s a tragic story, really, since the way her brothers treated her were in some ways her origin story. Her body was eventually sent off for “testing,” and at Indian Hill (owned by Wayne Enterprises) of all places!

Now, let’s turn to the darker side of Edward Nygma … and his admission that he killed Kristen Kringle’s awful ex Tom. She said that she wanted him to be a little more edgy, but we don’t exactly think that she wanted him to be this. In his demented mind, he thought that she wanted him to admit to something like this. This story to us far surpassed the story of Bridgit, mostly because we’d been building to it for so long. It was emotional, dangerous, and set the stage precisely for what could bring him to become the Riddler.

If you would have told us a year ago that we would have been this invested in Nygma’s story, we wouldn’t have believed you. Now, it’s one of the most compelling parts of the show. While “By Fire” was not perfect (Selina’s story is still weak, and more could have been done with Bruce and Theo), this may be one of “Gotham’s” best episodes to date. Grade: A-.
