‘Downton Abbey’ season 6, episode 5 preview: Laura Carmichael’s Edith looks to the future

Edith -The sixth season of “Downton Abbey” has featured some fun twists and turns, but at the same time there have been some consistencies we have seen thematically from start to finish. One of the biggest ones that fits into that is change. These are characters who have to be ready for a new Britain, one with fewer servants, more people in progressive positions, and people escaping some familiar gender and class roles.

When it comes to Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), much of her transformation is about forcing her family into a new century. She has been the most progressive character insofar as expanding her professional sphere, and that includes picking up where the late Michael Gregson left off in the newspaper industry.

You can see Edith on the job above in the photo from Sunday’s episode, as she continues her search for a female editor. She’s well aware of what would happen if she hired both a man and woman for the same position, so she wants to figure out a way to do things differently.

Over the course of the final four episodes plus a Christmas Special, we anticipate more job success coming her way, and who knows? Maybe she will be able to find love as well!  The great thing about her character is that she has followed a non-traditional path. She’s found her career and her voice, and as a result of that anyone she meets moving forward is going to have to find a way to fit within that world. She doesn’t seem to be the sort who is ready to abandon everything and change for someone else and it’s one of the many reasons why we love her.
