‘The Leftovers’ season 2 changes things up for lighter opening credits

If there was any indication that “The Leftovers” was at least looking to be superficially different in season 2, we have the latest bit of evidence below: The new opening title sequence, which seems much less interested in art history and also being incredibly dreary.

This sequence, first shown by The Hollywood Reporter, uses a clever strategy of creating silhouettes around most of the primary cast and crew members. Even though these are the people still on planet Earth, it’s a nice play on the whole Departure theme without being overtly dark. (Also, we got excited when we saw Ann Dowd’s name in the credits; it is still easy to forget that she is returning, even after what happened to her character in the first season.)

Don’t take this as a guarantee that the show will resort to a lighter tone as a whole in the second season; based on everything we have heard so far, there will certainly be a more hopeful beginning for Kevin Garvey and his family as they move to the town of Miracle, Texas, a place marked by zero departures. The question remains as to whether or not this hope will remain after the first few episodes, when it starts to become clear that this place is not anywhere near as hopeful as they once believed it to be.
