MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 5, episode 3 preview: Matty feels the pain of being unpopular
Poor Matty. Through much of “Awkward” season 5, the guy has had a chance to be the cream of the crop at Palos Hills. The other guys respect him, many of the women have a crush on him, and even some of the teachers are nicer to him than others.
So what is happening to him on Monday night is something that he is far from familiar with: He’s being ignored, disregarded, and really not treated well by anyone he comes into contact with. As Jenna tells him in the sneak-peek video below, he has become something incredibly unknown to him. For the most part, it’s funny, and it all stems more or less from how he handled the situation with Gabby and Jake on this past episode. Nobody in the school looks up to him anymore, but he at least still has Jenna to talk to … even if she is somehow now popular, and doesn’t really understand what to do with herself, either.
Is the portrayal of Matty as unpopular accurate? We would say no, mostly because we feel like lunch-ladies and other school employees tend to be extra sensitive to the outcasts, given that they are more relatable and are people who need the support. However, we always enjoy “Awkward” the most when we think of at as a satire of high-school life, and the feelings that any given person may have when things are going either really well or really badly for them. That is why everything is exaggerated, and through this lens, it all does make sense.
