MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 5, episode 1 review: Should Jenna have told Matty the truth?
It really has been a long time since we’ve seen new episodes of “Awkward” on MTV. As a matter of fact, it took us a good percentage of the episode to really remember everything that happened over the course of the past season during the premiere. For example, we’re talking a little bit about Tamara’s engagement.
As it turns out, Tamara managed to actually take another step in her relationship with her Marine, who she only dated once before this episode really even got going. By the time we rolled around to the end of the half-hour, she was thinking about wedding dates! We still don’t think there are legs to this relationship, but she is someone who likes to plan things out on extreme levels.
What really matters most to anyone who watched the show over the course of the past several years is the status of Jenna and Matty … and it’s not great going out of this episode. She didn’t tell him about his girlfriend Matty hooking up with Jake, and he found out on his own later after Jake couldn’t help himself with the jealousy. As of right now Jenna has “bad friend” status, and she needs to fix that before she can ever be a good friend once again.
The development of the story tonight was definitely important, as was the introduction of senior pranks into the show. Unfortunately, we don’t think that the show really delivered enough from the comedy standpoint, which is a shame since this is what this show technically is. Grade: C+.
