2015 Emmys: ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘House of Cards,’ ‘Masters of Sex’ stars fight for Guest Actress
We’ve made it to the last entry in the Drama category that we’re going to be spotlighting in our 2015 Emmy series here at CarterMatt, and as we’ve said previously, we haven’t spent too much time really looking into the guest entries until now. There are just so many candidates before nominations that it causes our head to spin.
Now, we’re at a point where we can have a little clarity, and the Guest Actress in a Drama Series field is a good one. You know you’ve got a good race when there is not a single nominee that the Television Academy can single out as a legacy nominee, meaning that they will actually have to choose who among the group is the most qualified for a trophy.
The nominees
Khandi Alexander, “Scandal”
Rachel Brosnahan, “House of Cards”
Allison Janney, “Masters of Sex”
Margo Martindale, “The Americans”
Diana Rigg, “Game of Thrones”
Cicely Tyson, “How to Get Away with Murder”
Who should win – How do you pick from this group? We feel like this past season of “Scandal” as a whole hurts Alexander, and Brosnahan is probably just not a big enough name in this field to get an Emmy. This leaves us with four possible candidates, and at the moment we’re inclined to pick Tyson just based on her work as Annalise Keating’s mother Ophelia Hartness. She didn’t have the air time as some of the other nominees, but she did the most with what she had.
Who will win – We’re not ruling out Rigg (we would be stupid to given her resume), but the Emmys love Allison Janney. She could have a role where she does the chicken dance and would probably be nominated. It helps that she has a wonderful role on “Masters of Sex” that makes her such a favorite. We anticipate it being between her and Tyson ultimately for the trophy.
