‘Under the Dome’ season 3: The latest look at renewal hopes via DVR ratings
We’ve been charting the renewal hopes for CBS’ “Under the Dome” for quite some time, and there is one specific reason for it: We find this particularly fascinating given all the various components involved. This is a show that is not getting the great live ratings that it used to, and there are constant complaints that the show is not what it once was. However, at the same time it does well in live+7 ratings (which is live viewing plus seven days of DVR viewing), and it also has a robust streaming deal with Amazon that serves as an additional revenue stream. We actually think that this deal is one of the reasons why a show like “Extant” was renewed last summer.
So was the show aided significantly in the latest DVR numbers? The numbers from the start of the month were just revealed by TVbythenumbers, and the August 6 episode of the show improved from a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic up to a 1.5. This is an increase of almost 90%, and is one of the best ones for the week.
It is almost routine at this point that “Under the Dome” ranks as one of the most-recorded shows of the week, so we really cannot say that we’re too shocked by this. The issue here is that the live ratings are still so much lower than even many other summer shows. It is doing better than “Extant,” but that’s not saying a whole lot. As of right now, we’d say that the show is firmly a tossup to be coming back.
