‘True Detective’ season 2: One perspective on criticism before finale airs

Unless you have been hiding somewhere or have not been reading headlines, you probably know already that “True Detective” season 2 has been a pretty heavily-criticized season. Some dislike the dialogue, others dislike the confusing story. Some just more or less hate everything.

We haven’t felt the season is the complete dud that others have, but we feel like Rick Springfield (who had a creepy role as the surgeon this season) has a pretty good perspective on it. Speaking in a new interview with The Huffington Post during a recent “HuffPost Live” special, the singer / actor made it clear because almost everyone was expecting the show to not be as good:

“That’s to be expected. Everybody knew that, because the first one came out of the box and [viewers were] like, ‘Oh my God!’ So you can’t do that twice. You can’t go ‘Boo!’ twice … So I’m sure they knew that was going to be the initial reaction, because you can’t surprise people twice.”

Sometimes, there is a whole lot that can be said about what’s in a name, and we therefore wonder this: Would reaction to the series be any different at all if it went by a different name? Is “True Detective” in some ways limited by the fact that it is known with the same title? That is one of the only things the show really has in common with the first season other than its similar tone … which may also be part of the problem. You have to do something to evolve or build on what you did before, or try to augment some expectations. While we feel like season 2 had its moments, it never really made a push to break free from the mold.
