‘Suits’ season 5, episode 7 review: The most intense Gabriel Macht – Rick Hoffman scene ever
Wasn’t it only a matter of time before we saw things escalate between Harvey Specter and Louis Litt? These two characters on “Suits” are always going to be a yin and yang, and that was the case more than ever on Wednesday night’s new episode.
Ultimately, the return of Esther Litt proved very eventful, as it brought out all of the anger and jealousy that has existed between Harvey and Louis for some time. It stems from Louis’ history of feeling secondary at the firm, when it comes to Donna, and really when it comes to … everything. Family insecurity has become an enormous part of this story, and that proved to be the case yet again tonight as both Harvey and Louis’ pasts culminated in possibly the most intense scene featuring these two characters in the history of the show. It was sensational television, anchored by Gabriel Macht and Rick Hoffman earning this moment thanks to around five years worth of buildup.
Harvey punched Louis, a table was shattered, and Jessica saw her potential business in ruins with two partners completely going after each other. Louis figured out that Harvey and Esther slept together before Harvey could tell him (we do feel like he was about to), and Donna was an accessory in hiding some of the trouble. This was the second knife in the back for Louis that got us to this point.
We don’t know where these two go from here, but this had to be one of the best performances we’ve seen Macht and Hoffman (who are criminally underrated to begin with) give.
As for the story when it comes to Mike Ross, we finally circled back around to what is really the issue at the heart of the series: Him faking his Harvard Law education. After working a case successfully with Jack Soloff, he had an opportunity to get a promotion to junior partner. The problem? It couldn’t happen. She refused to put his name out there out of fear that he would be exposed, and we were left to wonder here how in the world the firm thought that this would ever be an issue in the slightest.
Given Jack’s connections to Hardman and Mike’s past never going away, who wants to bet that there will be more trouble here soon enough? We don’t want to see more of Mike suffering, but we do want to see more “Suits” … pretty much right now. An incredible episode, and easily the best of the season. Grade: A.
