‘Major Crimes’ season 4, episode 9 review: Justice for Marianna
Through most of this season of “Major Crimes,” one of the side stories has been learning a thing or two about the Alice Herrera case. Last week, we discovered that Alice’s real name was Marianna, and with the help of Gus, we are now starting to get closer to having some of the answers.
We know there was another case regarding a man at the center of viral video, and while that possessed some merit, it just was not as compelling as what we had going on with Gus and making sure that he got what he wanted in return for some of his testimony: He wanted Marianna to have a proper burial, and he also wanted to make sure that little sister Paloma would be cared for. The same goes for Rusty, as he started to forge a personal connection to the case.
This story also brought a whole lot to the table when it comes to establishing the blossoming dynamic with Rusty and Flynn, who have so much greater stakes now that Flynn and Sharon are dating. Rusty wants to know he can trust him and is not just providing lip-service. We hope that Gus and Paloma are taken care of because the results if they are not would be catastrophic. Hopefully, this will carry forward into the finale.
As a whole, these tremendous character moments were enough to make the show shine, and at least the viral video case was fascinating enough to watch. It’s nice to see the show take on issues related to technology. Grade: B+.

I loved this episode. It started off with a bang with that very powerful moment in the morgue when Gustavo identified Marianna. As tearful and distraught as Gustavo was, I thought Sharon stole the scene with her very quiet empathy. That scene was also a great contrast to the scene at the end, when they confronted the wife in the morgue. Lots of great one liners from most of the team (Buzz, Sykes, Provenza and Raydor). The very last scene between Flynn and Rusty was excellent.
