‘True Detective’ season 2 spoilers: Answers on Ray Velcoro coming shortly

HBO logoWe have to give “True Detective” some credit for having guts … mostly for potentially blowing the guys clean out of one of their main characters. The moment at the end of Sunday night’s new episode revolving around Ray Velcoro was one of the most shocking things that the series has delivered to date, and we are still left with what we feel is a pretty important question: Is this guy really dead?

One way or another, it will not take long to have an answer to this question. A new report from TV Guide makes it clear that some further information is going to come your way during the early part of Sunday night’s new episode. We have already made it clear that this could be the breaking point for this whole season. If the show manages to do something completely stunning with the Ray character like kill him off, we’ll applaud them for it. It’s not that we dislike Colin Farrell, but this is the sort of enormous move that we never expected to see the show pulling off at any point this season. It will really give you a sense that anyone can die at any time, and you are not going to be spared just because of the fact that you are a famous actor.

Meanwhile, if the character does end up living, the show better do something to make it feel somewhat earned. Specifically, we mean that if they do not frame this properly, it will cheapen Ray being shot in the chest with a shotgun, and we’ll have a hard time taking this supposedly-realistic show seriously. There are a couple of different ways to go with it.

Even before the shooting, Ray was not exactly having a wonderful time. He learned that he was about to lose any real rights to spend time with the boy he considers to be his child, after he decided to teach a bully a lesson back during the season premiere.
