‘The Last Ship’ season 2, episode 3 review: Does Chandler have his new normal?
Last week’s premiere of “The Last Ship” felt like an action-packed TV movie, given that we had character deaths, relentless action, and a journey to get Chandler and many of his crew members back on the Nathan James.
As for what happened tonight, we had a story that was in many ways different. It was much slower, and much more based on relationships and some of the emotions associated with leaving people behind. For one, Chandler decided that he would leave his family behind in Norfolk while continuing to lead the ship, however difficult that may be. Many other crew members were found in Washington, and for a time there was a debate as to whether Chandler would even stay on board at all. He did, and they have their new development of a cure and a mission. They are still heroes, but changed ones in many ways.
Do we have a setup of some villains? Certainly. Whatever is going on with the Irish pastor is something that will pay off down the road; everyone has their own agenda, and some of the biggest threats are those you do not fully understand just yet. This seems to be the case on this series so much more often than not.
As a whole, though, we wish that this was much more like the first two episodes of season 2. After going through that crazy experience, this one felt like we were drifting for the most part in the middle of the ocean. Grade: C+.
