Showtime will bring ‘Masters of Sex,’ ‘Homeland,’ more to Hulu
Clearly, Showtime is very much invested in expanding its reach as far as possible. How else do you explain some of the latest news that is coming out right now?
It was announced today that in time for the premiere of “Masters of Sex” and “Ray Donovan” on July 12, the pay-cable network is going to start putting some of their content online via Hulu. For an additional $8.99 a month on top of your Hulu subscription, you will be able to watch current Showtime series to go along with some classic shows that have already ended. It is ultimately yet another way to get this programming out there; Showtime already announced that they are launching a standalone service similar to HBO NOW, which is going to cost $10.99 to subscribe to on its own.
In a statement, Showtime Networks chairman / CEO Matt Blank said the following:
“We’re excited to be the first premium service available to Hulu’s growing subscriber base and look forward to offering their customers our award-winning original programming, films and documentaries across almost every device … Hulu is an important launch partner for Showtime as we continue to expand our service across new platforms and distributors, reaching new consumers wherever a broadband connection is available.”
Ultimately, we feel like it is a very smart move to try to diversify as much as possible, and come up with creative ways to attract new viewers. The problem Showtime has at the moment is that they are missing a flagship show. “Homeland” is popular but inconsistent, while “Ray Donovan” and “Masters of Sex” have devoted but smaller fan followings. “The Affair” got a ton of Golden Globes buzz, but has been quieter come Emmy season.
Maybe all of this will change for the network courtesy of their “Twin Peaks” revival. At the moment, they are missing what HBO has with “Game of Thrones.”
