‘Homeland’ season 5 spoilers: How much does Rupert Friend (or anyone) know?
One of the fascinating things at the moment about premium cable television is that we are very much living in the spoiler age, and also where producers do their best to make adjustments on the fly. Therefore, it is not exactly much of a surprise that actors have to go into seasons of many shows out there blind, not knowing a specific plan of where things are going.
When it comes to “Homeland,” this is especially true since there is really nothing to rely on. In killing Nicholas Brody, for example, the show proved that they are willing to take enormous risks. Meanwhile, there is no source material, and in theory as a result of that anyone can be written in or out of a series without consequence. As Rupert Friend (Quinn) tells Deadline, the cast is “not given a season outline or anything … It’s done very much blow-by-blow.”
So how does someone like Friend handle filming the show without knowing the future? It’s a tricky question. While we will not speak for him, we imagine that if we were injected into his situation, our emotional process would be taking on various issues by wondering what the consequences would be, and then playing into that on screen. For example, you know that making a big move against a terrorist organization could lead to success and better national security, but at the same time it could end your life.
Season 5 of “Homeland” premieres on Showtime later this fall, and we presume more news will be available soon.
