‘Penny Dreadful’ season 3 official; Showtime renews drama as season 2 finale nears

Were we ever completely concerned over the future of “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime? Not really, but sometimes it is still nice to hear news like what we have for you today: The network is bringing the supernatural drama back for another season. The ratings have been fairly solid, and given that this series is more of a co-production, it doesn’t even carry with it the same amount of financial responsibility.

Per a press release, the new season will film on location in Ireland, and is slated to run for nine episodes in 2016. Here is more from Showtime president David Nevins on the subject.

“[Writer and executive producer] John Logan’s brilliant writing and this amazingly talented ensemble continue to draw a passionate, global fan base into the meticulously crafted world of Penny Dreadful … Together with our wonderful partners at Sky Atlantic, we’re excited to see what new haunts John and his team have in store for Season 3.”

So why does this show continue to fluctuate so much when it comes to its overall episode count? the only real answer that we can offer up for you at the moment is strictly that the series is alternating things around based more on the story that Logan wants to tell. This show is a little different and of the European sensibility, as he writes the entirety of every episode. They are more keen to follow along what he wants than, say, a show with an enormous writers room.

There are still two more episodes of “Penny Dreadful” season 2 to enjoy, so rest assured that the series is not going anywhere in the immediate future.
