‘Ballers’: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s HBO comedy gets preview before ‘Game of Thrones’ finale
Let’s face it: There are few spots that you want to be promoted in more than the spot right before “Game of Thrones.” HBO never shows their biggest hit starting directly at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, and that means that you get a minute or two of something else beforehand.
On Sunday night, the show that received this sort of primo treatment from the network was none other than “Ballers.” The Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson series is going to be premiering after “True Detective” in a week’s time, and it looks to have a lot going for it right now. Johnson stars as a former football superstar who is still trying to make his presence felt, and he still has quite a bit of a swagger about him. Ultimately, this feels a little like “Hard Knocks” meets an even more entertaining “Entourage.”
One of the great things about Johnson is that he always continues to surprise us in one form or another. For example, you would think at the moment that he would just want to do movies given the success of “San Andreas” and “The Fast and the Furious” franchise, but he is just trying to take roles that suit what he can do. Johnson’s shown time and time again on “Saturday Night Live” that he can be funny, and he will probably one of the show’s biggest assets.
Stay tuned, as we will have more on “Ballers” in due time.
