‘True Detective’ season 2: Latest promo hypes up critical acclaim
With the premiere of “True Detective” season 2 a little over a week away, some critics are starting to get an opportunity to finally see whether or not the show’s return to HBO is worth all of the hype. While we have not yet seen the Nic Pizzolatto opus, most of the buzz online from critics so far has been good, but not necessarily great. We’ve heard some complains that the show a perhaps a little too serious, that the show could be doing more with its female characters, and simply that the expectations for this season were perhaps too high given the runaway success of season 1.
So with all of this being said, it’s probably a smart move on the part of the network to put out a promo (see below) that does something a little bit different, and specifically chooses to highlight some of the positive things that are coming out about the new season, from its intensity to the performances to the overall vibe of this new creation, set in Los Angeles.
We personally don’t have any doubts that this series is going to be incredibly compelling this year. Pizzolatto has a gift for making viewers ask hard questions and approach his material analytically. The one issue that he may run into here for us is that he may almost make this too existential for his own good. You have to find that fine line between making something original enough to stand out, but also familiar enough that it does not feel completely foreign.
As we said, we still have a solid eight more days. That is enough time to explore some of these subjects further.
