‘True Detective’ season 2 spoilers: Colin Farrell on similarities, differences to season 1
The first season of “True Detective” was almost a TV cannonball, firing off right away with critical acclaim and setting a huge precedent for almost anything that came after it. The show may be a little more immune to a sophomore slump than many other shows simply due to the fact that it is not bringing back the same characters, but there is obviously still a fear that the show simply will struggle to be on the same level.
As it turns out, Colin Farrell had the same fear at first, metaphorically wishing “good luck” to whoever ended up getting the parts. This is what he told Variety, but admitted that once he saw the script, he realized that this was something that he knew he was going to have to be a part of. From there, he went on to describe how there are some pieces to this season that are very different than the first season, but also a few thematic elements that are at least somewhat similar:
“Aesthetically, it’s very different … There are four main characters, as opposed to the two-character structure that’s in the first piece. But it’s a lot of the same sensibilities, and a lot of the characters are struggling with the same kind of existential quandaries and questions that are related to meaning and purpose and the burying of the darkness that may be in your past.”
Given that one of the characters on this show in Ray (Vince Vaughn) is a career criminal, it is pretty easy to figure out that he is a man with a trail of indiscretions in the past. Part of the enjoyment of the upcoming season for us could be finding out what other secrets are buried for Farrell’s character and others.
