‘Downton Abbey’ season 6 and the great prop debate
At the end of many series, it has become in some ways a tradition for cast and crew members to take home with them valuable props. If nothing else, this is a way for them to carry some sort of keepsake from their time working on the show, and it is a nice thing for them to have to look back on. “What did you take from the set?” is often a question that is asked in many series finale post-mortems.
Unfortunately, the latest rumors out there in regards to “Downton Abbey” make it pretty darn clear that come the end of this season, it may not be possible for anyone to take home a hat, a plate, or any other piece of the extravagant set. This is at least according to Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley), who had the following to say on the subject in an interview with the Daily Mail:
“When it’s over, it would have been nice to take a prop home with me from the set … But we’ve specifically been told we’re not allowed to do that.”
A spokesperson for the show could neither confirm nor deny that this is something that has happened:
“The producers have not sent out a memo to cast and crew banning them from taking props. Whether anything has been said in person is a different matter and not something I could comment on.”
If this is true, there are some potential reasons for it. Maybe some of the props are borrowed or extremely valuable, or maybe the plan is for them to go to some sort of local museum after the fact. Our suggestion to the cast and crew? Take lots of pictures, or maybe journal every night. This will add something different to the proceedings.
