Fall TV Preview: Do Jane Lynch, Maggie Lawson have a hit with ‘Angel From Hell’?

Given how many new series tend to come and go throughout the course of a TV shows, it does not take a good bit for us to be genuinely interested in something from the jump. Luckily, we did feel this way about the new CBS comedy “Angel From Hell.” The moment that we learned about the premise of the show (a young woman named Allison finds a “guardian angel” named Amy, and hijinks ensue), we were in … especially when we learned that Maggie Lawson (“Psych”) and Jane Lynch (“Glee”) were in as the leads. Any chance that we can get to watch an idea that is at least trying something new, we’ll give it our attention.

What works – The premise alone. Odd-couple comedies are often fun, and this one has the same sort of great foundation that we’ve seen from so many hits on TV already. Even CBS has one in “2 Broke Girls.” We love Maggie Lawson and Jane Lynch, and there are some laughs present in the trailer below. We also like the risk for CBS moving away from their traditional sitcoms. Maybe it will not work at all, but it’s an admirable decision.

What doesn’t – How does the show move beyond the initial premise? Will the show rely too heavily on Lynch for its success? We are a little nervous that the novelty will wear off here following the first few episodes, and the show is going to need some strong writing, and also some notable guest stars, to sustain.

Our verdict – Right now, this has the potential to be the best new comedy of the season. We just do not know yet if it will be level up to the billing yet, since the trailer has to spend so much time setting up the premise and getting you on board that there is not a ton of time for laughs.
