Critics’ Choice TV Awards 2015: Is ‘Veep,’ ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘Mom’ favorite for Comedy Series?
Welcome to the latest CarterMatt spotlight article! With the 2015 Critics’ Choice TV Awards taking place on May 31, we are going to spend every day from now until then spotlighting one of the categories, some of the favorites, and also upset hopes. This is one of our favorite awards shows to discuss as a TV critic, and it is also a nice warm-up in preparation for the Emmys at the same time.
We’re starting today with Best Comedy Series, which is especially diverse here in that you’ve got cable shows, network shows, streaming shows, and even one that runs for 43 minutes without commercials. While we feel like there is a clear favorite, there is also still some room for an upset or two to enter the equation.
The nominees
Broad City (Comedy Central)
Jane the Virgin (The CW)
Mom (CBS)
Silicon Valley (HBO)
Transparent (Amazon)
Veep (HBO)
You’re the Worst (FX)
Who should win – We feel like a win for “Broad City,” “Jane the Virgin,” or “Transparent” would be certainly understandable, but right now “Silicon Valley” is killing it with some of the funniest episodes of any show that we’ve seen in a very long time. The whole “Let Blaine Die” storyline was pure hilarity from Sunday night. Maybe it is a little premature to call this since the season is not over, but you could make the same argument for a show like “Veep” at this point.
Who will win – You can never rule out “Veep,” given that it is a critics’ favorite and no one can get enough of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. However, we feel like the narrative for “Transparent” has been so strong, and the social climate, combined with it being an incredible series, will be enough to make this one of the night’s easier awards to call. “Mom,” which is coming off of an improved and at times emotional second season, is a good darkhorse possibility.
