Michelle Obama, David Letterman trade barbs in final ‘Late Show’ appearance
As sad as we are about David Letterman retiring next month from “The Late Show,” there is also still something rather fun about watching him wind down the show in a way. He’s a little snarkier, a little more pensive, and almost a little more relaxed with some of his guests (and that is saying something, since he hasn’t particularly been on the edge in a good twenty years).
Tonight, Dave will have First Lady Michelle Obama on the show for the fifth and final time with him as host, and the preview below is all sorts of delightful. It begins with him skewering him for looking like a guy about to end his show, and that leads to a fun back-and-forth about what the two could doing in a couple of years once they are each done with their current positions. Michelle offers to help raise his child, which he jokes is in a way “pathetic.” He then makes another comment that draws a big laugh from the First Lady.
There’s always something fun about the way Letterman interviews, and it has not really been replicated elsewhere. While we get a sense that there is at least some structure laid out before a guest goes on stage, Dave still leaves a little bit of freedom and ebb and flow in the conversation. He’s also self-deprecating, and he finds a way to ask tough questions without the interview subject really knowing what he is doing.
Many familiar faces will be gracing Letterman’s show before he ends his run, and let us just hope that Regis Philbin will be one of them. He has always been a favorite, even though we have loved Bill Murray, Howard Stern, and many more.
