‘Chicago Fire’ season 3: The latest on ‘Chicago Med’ spin-off hopes

NBC is well on the way to becoming the Dick Wolf Channel, and we’re starting to think that they would not have it any other way. None of his series are necessarily smash hits, but they are solid. It is the sort of programming you can build around, and given the disaster that the network was years ago, this is a chance to really establish something.

As you know, “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago PD,” and “Law & Order: SVU” are all coming back for another season, and things are looking really strong right now for “Chicago Med.” According to a new report right now courtesy of Deadline, this series is looking really strong right now as a pickup after it launched successfully as a backdoor pilot during “Chicago Fire.” The plan could feasibly be here to premiere it at midseason, which is a strategy that NBC used previously to launch “Chicago PD.”

For a while, we were admittedly rather skeptical that this show was going to be picked up at all, but we also had a pretty decent reason to be! Just remember here that there was an issue in regards to programming, since NBC had another medical drama in “The Night Shift” already, and another hospital pilot in development. Given that the former has proven to be a pretty epic letdown following “The Voice,” we’re not entirely sure it will be back … or at least back during the fall or spring. Maybe that will be better suited as an inclusion in the summer lineup.

We will probably get the complete word on the fate of “Chicago Med” during the NBC upfront presentations, which are slated to take place in May.
