Ratings: ‘Scorpion’ goes into season 2 on high note
It may have taken a little while for “Scorpion” to find its voice and its place on TV this season, it certainly had by the time we went into the final arc of the season. There were a series of great episodes to close things off, and that included a big Walter / Paige moment in the finale (well more of Paige revealing her feelings for Walter while he was sedated in a hospital bed).
Clearly, the viewers have responded to the high quality in a way that should make CBS rather happy. The season 1 finale, with the final ratings included, posted a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and over 10.7 million viewers. This puts the show at #2 in the demo on the night behind “The Voice,” and also in total viewers behind “Dancing with the Stars.” This is certainly impressive for a scripted show in the age of DVRs and streaming content. It also happens to be the highest-rated broadcast in both measures since early February, and many shows tend to lose a little bit of steam in the spring.
Of course, we don’t see the show getting the 3.0+ ratings that it scores for its first two episodes again anytime soon; that was when it was still trying to find its voice, and it also had the luxury of airing after “The Big Bang Theory” then. However, since late October it has been reasonably consistent, cycling between a 1.9 and a 2.4 rating. There is one exception to that in the Sunday airing, which drew a 3.2 but had the luxury of airing after an NFL conference championship game. It’s sort of an unfair comparison to include it in most of the data.
CBS has already renewed “Scorpion” for a second season, and with its success we more than imagine it getting the chance to air in the same exact timeslot as before.
