‘Mad Men’ season 7, episode 9 podcast: Old and ‘New Business’ with Jessa
We’re a little late when it comes to discussing the latest “Mad Men” episode (rough week on the vocal cords!), but we wanted to get something together prior to the arrival of tonight’s new episode on AMC. Therefore, we’ve got for you a shorter version of our traditional show podcast below, where we (being Matt Carter and Jessa) sit down to discuss themes, characters, and speculate over the future.
In this particular case, there is quite a bit to discuss in relation to “New Business,” starting with the implementation of Diana as a character. What are we meant to take away from her as a character? This is a nice continuation of what we discussed in our text series “Mad About Mad Men,” where we go through some other major themes and concepts.
From here, it only seems appropriate to discuss Megan Draper, and what she brings to Don now compared to who she was before their marriage, and what Diana is also bringing to the table. Megan continues to be fascinating, but also in this case somewhat of a victim after what Harry Crane tries to do to her.
Finally, we talk briefly about some of the other characters, including some that have not really been much of a focus to this point such as Pete Campbell and Betty Francis. How much will they matter in the stretch run? How much should they matter? If one of them has found happiness, are they as interesting now as they were before?
