‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: Calum Scott, Ruby Red Performers, and Wendy the Dog star in premiere
We adore “Britain’s Got Talent.” It’s completely insane most of the time, but occasionally there are a few performers who blow us away and completely move us. Go watch the audition of Susan Boyle, Ashleigh & Pudsey, or some other top personalities over the years. Also, David Walliams is our spirit animal.
Narinder – Yes, everyone did cheer at this, even though his talent was effectively playing music with a comb and a playing card. This is something you do when you are at a cabin somewhere and your phone is dead, and you have nothing to do but drink and make silly noises out of a comb.
Matt McCreary – He feels like a contestant on “Ninja Warrior” as much as this show. He was athletic, acrobatic, and fun … especially when he pretended to actually be hurt after he jumped from the balcony.
Magnalena – One of the better contortionists that we’ve seen. You can tell that she has been doing this and training her body for tough tricks for quite some time.
Billy and Emily England – We met them before the season in video form, and they are excellent. Who roller skates like this? It feels like someone with a serious death wish more so than anyone else. It’s legitimately scary, but awesome.
Ysgol Glanaethwy Choir – We had to look up the spelling here. We’re going to sound somewhat like the ignorant American here, but we’ve never heard the song and feel like people in England and Wales will appreciate the beauty here more than we will.
One Man and His Dog – This dog’s talent was apparently hating Ant, which was extremely hilarious, but not that good of an act.
Wendy the singing dog – What a weird, wacky performance this was! Sure, Wendy is not necessarily singing, but this is still a fun sort of ventriloquist act featuring the dog. The challenge here is that the element of surprise is gone.
Jade and Calum Scott – This was a tough emotional rollercoaster. Jade went out first and was far inferior to her brother. It was almost like her emotional vulnerability was internal, and he was able to bring that into the actual lyrics of the song. A great voice, and that golden buzzer from Simon Cowell completely stunned us.
Mal Jacobs – Hey, he’s a ventriloquist with an ostrich! That’s new … right? Terrible.
Tony & Andrew – Maybe the hokiest thing we’ve ever seen involving organs. Maybe this would have won in 1933?
Ruby Red Performers – A completely silly way to conclude the show, but a whole lot of fun. We don’t know where they go from here after taking their clothes off and dancing about the stage in surprising fashion, but as a one-off television moment, great stuff.
