‘Downton Abbey’ season 6: Elizabeth McGovern comments on series ending

Cora -It was only a matter of time before we started to hear some of the cast members from “Downton Abbey” speaking about the end of the series being closer than ever. It also makes sense that Elizabeth McGovern is one of the first to do so. Through the entire process of the series being made, she has approached it with a certain sense of realism. She understood that a show like this has a certain shelf life, and it was bound to end sooner rather than later.

So while promoting her new movie “Woman in Gold,” McGovern told E! News that she is not regretting anything nor is she bummed that the show is ending too soon. She feels like it is time:

“I haven’t taken a poll, but I think that the actors in general really feel as though it’s the right time for it to end … I don’t think anybody wanted it to go on beyond it’s sell-by date.”

For the most part, it does feel like the series is going out on top, at least for the most part. Is it possible that they could have squeezed another season out of it beyond this? Maybe the ratings would have been okay, but the reality here is that the majority of the cast members were hoping to leave after the season anyway, and if they had not ended the show now, there would have been a potential risk of losing them down the line.
