‘Call the Midwife’ season 4, episode 1 review (PBS): Trixie and Tom’s big news and more
“Call the Midwife” fans in America, rejoice! The British import returned to PBS on Sunday night with its season 4 premiere, and as a whole it was a solid hour of TV, but also very complicated.
Since we have already reviewed the show in England, what we are going to do with every episode review in America is discuss five essential moments that took place that either produced an emotional reaction (that happens often on this show), or will be remembered and thought about moving forward. There are no major spoilers for the rest of the season, so just think of this as a fun companion to what has become a guilty pleasure for many.
1. Trixie and Tom are now engaged! Trixie finally opened up her heart for love last season, and it carried over to this big moment. For the time being, our suggestion is to just celebrate the joy that these two share, given that this will be an up-and-down season for the character as a whole.
2. Trixie also became invested in a young man who has been forced to find a way for himself in this world without much help. It showed off her softer, sensitive side, and juxtaposed well with her engagement, something that is often a symbol of happiness or in some cases opulence.
3. Charlotte Ritchie debuted as Barbara Gilbert tonight. She is a humble, but ambitious woman who brings a different energy to Nonnatus House. One episode in, we like her, but the Jessica Raine comparisons will obviously remain for fans.
4. Speaking of Jenny, the worst move Helen Thomas made in constructing season 4 was keeping Vanessa Redgrave as narrator. Unless she is telepathic or someone like Trixie updated her on every finer detail of life at Nonnatus, it doesn’t make sense for the story to come from old Jennifer Worth anymore.
5. Be prepared for a little less Chummy all season long. Miranda Hart is a very busy woman!
