‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ will follow ‘NCIS’ repeats this summer
Apparently, CBS is not so inclined to bring out a carousel of various late-night guest hosts for “The Late Show” this summer. Instead, James Corden is going to have a very unique challenge in coming on after a crime drama in “NCIS.”
During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Corden made it clear that “The Late Late Show” is going to air after “NCIS” repeats in the summer after David Letterman retires. Not only that, but he also made it clear that he was taking a page from another late-night host in Graham Norton in that there are going to be interviews between a variety of different guests out on stage at the same time. This is something that Johnny Carson also used to do, and we like it. While you may not get as much self-promotion out of the guests, it’s a chance to create a more social environment that is not so entirely pre-planned. That is something that Corden’s own predecessor Craig Ferguson was absolutely great at during his time at CBS.
When it comes to expectations for the series, Corden admits that he is hesitant to be optimistic, mostly because it is far to early and he does not want to over-hype the series:
“To publicly come out and say, ‘This show is going to be this, that or the other,’ would be ridiculous because it won’t be straight away. They never are. No one ever watched Jimmy Fallon’s first Late Night and went, ‘Oh my God, this guy is going to raise The Tonight Show and single handedly bring late night into a relevance that we didn’t know would come around again.’ No one watched that first episode when he’s talking to Robert Di Niro would have said that. It just takes time. This isn’t in any way some faux humility. It’s just a fact.”
