‘Scorpion’ season 1, episode 19 review: Is Happy pulling away from Toby?
We have been getting sporadic episodes of “Scorpion” over the past few weeks which is part of the downfall from getting a whole bunch of episodes every week for months, but it’s back tonight and we couldn’t be happier – especially since we are completely invested in Toby and Happy’s romantic life.
Seeing Happy and Toby trying to figure out how to date each other is very cute, especially since Toby is only able to get Happy to come out with him on a dinner date as part of a dare. The case of the week gave us a really cute and totally terrifying moment for Toby and Happy tonight as a helicopter they were in was plummeting to the ground. Toby unbuckled himself and jumped on top of Happy to make sure she was protected. Le sigh – so adorable! Unfortunately to protect her, he dumped the phone they needed to contact anyone about their whereabouts, but Happy is using it as an excuse to push Toby away. We aren’t too surprised by this since Happy is the type of person that takes a step forward and then takes two steps back in fear of getting hurt. When they are about to burn to death, Toby is about to tell Happy that he’s in love with her and gets out half of the words before Cabe saves everyone. How does she react to what he was going to say? She took it pretty well and while she may not be ready to say the words back, we feel that she will get there.
With Toby being so in tune with his own feelings, he calls Walter out on having feelings for Paige noting all of the little things and special treatment Walter has been giving her. Walter lies about having feelings for her, but did we expect anything different from him? He starts trying to show that she is being treated like everyone else, but Toby isn’t buying what he is selling. When they are facing certain death in the burning woods, Walter touches Paige’s hand and she responds to his touch. Once they are all safe and back in the real world Walter is back to his familiar state… denial.
We love the slow build between Walter and Paige and we know that’s the end game for these two so we are in no rush, but when it comes to Happy and Toby, we can’t help but want instant gratification. They will obviously have their stumbles, especially with someone like Toby who is very in touch with his feelings and Happy who’s a pro at bottling them up, but we don’t need a slow burn with them like we do with Walter and Paige. Episode grade: A

I honestly hope the team throws a small party for Sylvester. He has made so much progress in the last several episodes to the point all of the crew ignore his constant nagging of fears (more so than usual, anyway). His growth I think far surpasses anyone else on the team, and it would be great if everyone got together and rewarded him for a job well done. Even Megan could make an appearance. I feel like this would strengthen his character even more and make him more confident.
I also want Ralph to have some one on one time with Sylvester. Ralph has spent time with all members except Sly, other than a brief chess game in the beginning episode. A chess tournament would actually be very fun! We could see everyone in action, maybe even Paige? It would be cute to see her and Happy face off, even though Paige would lose. I feel like Happy and Paige haven’t really bonded whatsoever, but a quick “you did well” could make their relations better. Even open the world for Happy consulting Paige for “girl talk” since she probably isn’t used to handling feelings such as love for Toby, but obviously can’t actually ask Toby about it.
What would be even better (sorry I’m all excited now) is if Walter would lose to Ralph in the tournament! I don’t think Walter would take it offensively, but would open up even more as a fatherly figure for Ralph. Ralph can face Sly in the final battle, perhaps being interrupted from finishing their game due to a case. If the case is like the old days where Sly stayed behind, perhaps Ralph could stay with him. They can talk advanced mathematics, aerospace, and maybe even touch on their fathers. Sly has made great headway with his past in this regard, but we never have heard Ralph’s actual opinion on the matter. Surely, being a genius, he knows Drew may not stay forever or notice Walter is more of a father. I think Sly would honestly be the best to talk to about this, since his dad and Drew are most similar. This also opens Sly’s family up for more discussion than we already know (which is less than other characters except Paige, whose family is apparently nonexistent…I’ve often wondered about Ralph’s grandparents…) as well as Ralph’s opinions and feelings, which we never really see
