Samantha Bee leaving ‘The Daily Show,’ our hosting dream is dead
This news makes us very sad. We already knew that Jessica Williams was out as a potential “Daily Show” host by her own admission. From there, we also learned that Jason Jones was exiting the Comedy Central series to star in his own program over on TBS.
Now, we can also rule out Samantha Bee, Jones’ wife and our personal pick to take over for Jon Stewart later this year. Bee has agreed to develop a new show for TBS, one that will, per a statement, serve as “a platform for Bee to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues.” This sounds almost like it will be a show that has at least some similarities to what she is currently doing. Personally, we’d advocate for this maybe being the network’s latest attempt at following up “Conan” with a different show.
As for where this leaves Comedy Central now going into the rest of the year, it’s an interesting question since most of the noteworthy recent correspondents have other gigs. Do you go back and offer something to Rob Corddry, or try to look outside the show to find a new potential host? Paul F. Thompkins is someone who would be fairly high on our list, given that he is a smart, funny guy who has the gravitas necessary to pull off this sort of gig.
For now, though, let’s tribute Bee for all of the great work she did with Stewart and company over the years. She was tremendous! Hopefully, this new venture does give her a chance to really expand her talent, and show people what she can really do. She will continue to do segments on “The Daily Show” periodically until production on her new show begins.
