‘Elementary’ season 3 spoilers: Show boss on Moriarty dilemma
Well, we have to at least give “Elementary” at the moment some credit for being clever. Going into the February sweeps, we were fairly clueless in regards to how the show was going to handle Moriarty as a character, and for a variety of reasons. After all, Natalie Dormer has not returned to the show all year, and was barely in season 2. However, the writers and producers also acknowledge that she is a huge, unavoidable part of this universe. You really cannot have Sherlock Holmes without her, given that she is in so many ways the yin to his yang.
So what are we to take from that Moriarty letter last night, and what she really did when it comes to Elana? Her move obviously impacts Joan, and it was certainly a deliberate one on her part. While we still do not know if Dormer will return anytime this season, executive producer Rob Doherty had the following to say about what this moment means to Entertainment Weekly:
“Even after three years, Moriarty isn’t sure how she feels about Joan … If you classified the relationship as ‘adversarial,’ Moriarty would tell you you’re being simplistic. There’s more to it than that. Joan means a great deal to Sherlock, and that means a great deal to Moriarty, and so Joan is afforded a kind of protection. Moriarty won’t allow any harm to come to her—at least until her ultimate agenda with regards to Sherlock comes into focus.”
Ultimately, let’s just say that this is a story in the making, and the writers obviously kicked back off this plotline for a reason.
