‘Empire’ episode 6 review: How was Courtney Love?
This has been a pretty interesting past few months for Courtney Love on TV. We previously saw her in a guest appearance on “Sons of Anarchy” as a teacher, and tonight, she joined “Empire” in a role that was certainly very different from anything that she has played as of late. She was a struggling singer who was at one point the stalwart of Empire Entertainment, and Cookie had the responsibility of bringing out the best from her.
While Taraji P. Henson’s character eventually succeeded at this, it was far from the only significant event that took place over the course of an hour filled with changes in security, Lucious getting a surprise or two, and also a paternity stunner at the end. That’s right: Jamal apparently has a child!
We use the word “apparently” for a reason, given that this show is still so early in production that we cannot really say that we’ve fully established its tone just yet. What we do know for the time being is that this is a show that could misdirect you a few times here and there.
Love was great, but what “Empire” still does the best is establishing giving you a good sense of the current music industry and the tricks being played. For example, using social media (in particular verified accounts with millions of followers) to promote new music. This is a tricky, complicated world, but also a fun one. Anika vs. Cookie in the first few minutes was pure gold.
We understand so far why this is such a popular show, in between the great performances and its modern feel. We just have to see if it lasts. Grade: B+.
