David Letterman chimes on Brian Williams’ NBC debacle
While most of the late-night community has made fun of Brian Williams and his controversial comments about his time in Iraq, we were most interested to see what David Letterman was going to have to say about it. Why? It all ties back to the fact that the NBC newsman first got himself in hot water courtesy of comments that he made about being in a helicopter in an interview on this show. These comments were an embellished version of a story that was more than a decade old, and when he repeated the embellished version on the Nightly News, someone started to put all of the pieces together.
So on Tuesday night’s edition of “The Late Show” (which was recorded before Williams was handed a six-month suspension by his network), Letterman kicked off a Top Ten List that was effectively ten other things that Williams may or may not have told the truth about. This was mildly funny much in the way that many of Dave’s lists are. The majority of them always have several duds, but also a few that come completely out of nowhere and are worth a laugh.
The thing that we were most disappointed about what that Letterman really did not offer much in the way of personal perspective on the part of Williams, other than joking that there should be a disclaimer that comes along with his show that not everything you see may be accounted as the truth. It was funny, but not necessarily that biting compared to what we’ve seen elsewhere.
Ultimately, Williams may end up thinking that this six-month suspension, even without pay, is a blessing. It may help some forget about his transgressions.
