‘Gotham’ episode 15 review: Was the Scarecrow origin story all you hoped for?

“The Scarecrow” was the title for tonight’s episode of “Gotham,” and the implication here was huge. This was a chance to tell the origin story for Jonathan Crane, a man who will someday become a master of fear and one of the most notable Batman villains of all time.

After watching this hour of TV, we feel like it is pretty clear why Jonathan would choose to go down this road. This episode was creepy, and in so many more ways than we can say here. The visuals for this episode were stunning for one, as Bullock and Gordon tried to stop his father, a madman who was coming up with a way to eliminate his own fear. We’d already witnessed some of his carnage on the show last week, and we definitely knew that there would be more where that came from. We at least know that the emotions are there for Jonathan now to descend into madness.

As for the Bruce Wayne story, it was just nice to see him away from Wayne Manor for a change. We saw him here start to grow up further following the death of his parents, but there was still a reminder in here that he is in fact still a child, and is not exactly ready to face his own fears just yet. Meanwhile, the Penguin is clearly showing that he has no fear at all when it comes to Maroni! This is going to get interesting…

This episode was great, and contained all we could possibly want. We very much enjoyed the development of Jonathan’s character, even if we did not see enough of his evil side just yet to suit our fancy. As much as we love Gordon and Bullock this series is really all about the villains and we love it. Grade: A- .
