‘Scorpion’ season 1 premiere review: Walter O’Brien meets his match
When we first heard about “Scorpion” we weren’t really on board since there are a billion other crime of the week procedural’s out there right now – is there really room for one more? Let’s take a look at what “Scorpion” has to offer us.
If you didn’t know, this is based off of the life of Walter O’Brien, who hacked into NASA when he was ten to steal their blueprints to hang on his bedroom wall. This of course landed him in a heap of trouble, but when he became an adult, it seemed that the FBI was in need of his special ability and the abilities of his genius friends. The problem here is that these four geniuses (Toby, Happy, Sylvester and Walter) all have serious problems adapting to society and aren’t that easy to work with, so the FBI quickly finds themselves in trouble communicating with this group.
Team “Scorpion” finds themselves in a diner as they try to help the FBI land a plane and in said diner we meet Paige, a waitress who has a genius son named Ralph that she’s always struggled to understand, but who Walter understands right away. The team manages to save the day with the help of Paige, so she basically becomes their babysitter/genius communication expert for the FBI/Cabe Gallo (also known as super bad ass Robert Patrick).
Over all we are a little worried about this show. Like we said there are a lot of other crime shows out there right now that offer what “Scorpion” is delivering as far as case of the week, but if they find a way to focus less on the case of the week and more on the geniuses then we think they could have something here. Also they need to really figure out what Paige’s role is because FBI genius babysitter is so far fetched that we just aren’t buying it. Episode grade: C+
