‘Blue Bloods’ season 5, episode 14 review: ‘The Poor Door’ and lessons

We have definitely seen a variety of surprises on “Blue Bloods” over the years, but we really did not get the sense that tonight’s “The Poor Door” was about that sort of thing at all. This was more of a softer, emotional episode about redemption, but also some of the class issues that plague New York City.

We felt for some of the stories and struggles for Danny and Frank this week, but not as much as we felt for those who were victimized by some of the corner-cutting that we did see this week. We tend to find at least one major political subject in the police discussed in every episode, and that seemed to be it tonight: Those who don’t do their job in the way in which it is intended. Sometimes, there are consequences … even if you do manage to hold on to it in the end.

What we did wonder after watching this episode, though, was something we have wondered really for the past several weeks: Are we starting to see this show get almost a little too comfortable? We watch almost every week with a pretty keen eye already about what to expect, and the vast majority of the time, we end up seeing the show stick to that mold. There is never a whole lot when it comes to deviation. Maybe this could be the time in the February sweeps to really try to shake things up, and try something a little different to surprise us.

Maybe, some of that will come up on the show next week, and we hope so given how there was not necessarily anything in here we’ll be remembering in a week or two’s time. Grade: B-.
